竹工芸は和の空間を演出する欠かせない小道具。京都の竹工芸には丸竹加工、籠編、すだれがある。伝統的には京都の粘りのある真竹が、外掛けすだれには近江八幡の葦を用いる。自然の風合いを生かすため素材の見極めが重要で、京都で編まれた竹編みの籠や丸竹加工品は茶の湯の美意識によって洗練され、ほかでは見られない繊細さ。

Bamboo craft items are essential in creating Japanese spaces. Bamboo products of Kyoto include Marutake (round bamboo) goods, Kagoami (bamboo baskets) and bamboo blinds. Traditionally, elastic timber bamboo from Kyoto is used to make these items, while reeds from Omihachiman City are used for external blinds. It is important to select the right materials to leverage their natural texture. Kyoto’s bamboo baskets and Marutake products have been refined in line with the aesthetic sense of the traditional tea ceremony, resulting in their unique sophistication.
