西陣が誇る、緻密な織りの技
「すくい織り」をインテリアとして楽しむ
「すくい織り」は、手機で縦糸を杼（ひ）ですくって絵柄を織り込んでゆく手織りの技法のひとつ。量産が難しく、高級品として珍重されている。この掛け軸は「西陣織会館」で織り上げられたもの。会館内では随時、すくい織りやつづれ織りのような一日数cmしか織り進めない技法、ジャカード織りやビロードなどの技の見学もできる。
Close-weaving techniques which are the pride of Nishijin; enjoy “scooped-weave” as a fabric ideal for interiors.
“Scooped-weave” is a method of weaving a design into the fabric by means of a hand-operated shuttle moved back and forth across the warp. Being handmade, it is difficult to produce in quantity, so it is valued as a very high-quality grade of fabric. This hanging scroll was made at the Nishijin Ori Kaikan. Weaving methods such as “scooped-weave” and hand-weave produce only a few centimeters of cloth a day. It is possible to visit the centre and observe these methods along with other things such as the jacquard loom and velvet work.
豪華な織りの立体感で「源氏物語」の名場面を描く。A re-creation of famous scenes from “the Tale of Genji” in a magnificent, almost three-dimensional weave.

すくい織りは縦糸の下に下絵を置き、織り手が下絵にあわせて緯糸で絵画を描くように、ひと糸ごとに織り進んでゆく。
In “scooped-weave”, a template is placed beneath the warp. The weaver re-creates the design in the woof, following the template thread by thread.
