Zogan is a technique with which patterns are drawn on an iron base using gold and silver leaf. Originating in Damascus, Syria, and brought to Japan via the Silk Road, the method is also called Damashin (Damascene) in Japan. At Kawahito Damascene, a technique known as Nunomezogan, which is common in Kyo Zogan, is used. Weave-like grooves are carved on an iron base, leaf is applied to them and the base is then fired to darken its color. The gold and silver shining on the dark base symbolize eternal luxuriousness.

Gold is carefully applied to the pattern on the iron base.
The base is fired, the darkened surface is polished, and fine lines are engraved,
thereby accentuating the lustre of the gold.
