In ancient times, Koma (spinning tops) were spun at ceremonies as objects thought to be inhabited by a god. Koma were also highly prized as a bringer of good luck; people associated their smooth rotation with the smooth development of things and the appearance of the core standing straight while spinning with an unwavering will. Toys called Kyokoma, made by cotton cloth or nishijinori cloth around the core of a Koma, used to be enjoyed indoors by people of high status. This rich history can be appreciated through their beautiful colors.

Kyokoma are made using a coil-build technique called Kentai, by which the core is cloth and then, in some cases, fixed with lacquer. The balance is checked through actually spinning the top.
