600年前から続く古典芸能、能。舞台で役者がつける面は、役柄を象徴する最も大切な道具。現代でも能面師は古い面に込められた精神性を重んじ、古面を写しながら新たな面を打つ。母の代から女性能面師の草分けとして活躍する岩井彩は木彫から表情、髪を描くまでを一人で手がける。プロの能役者も使用する一級品である。

Noh – a classic performance art with a 600-year history. Masks worn by Noh actors on stage are essential in symbolizing the roles they play. Modern-day Noh mask masters continue to respect the mentality captured in old masks and to create new pieces by copying old ones. Aya Iwai – a pioneering female Noh mask expert who has carried on her mother’s craft – single-handedly carries out all the related processes from woodcarving to the drawing of the face and hair. She produces top class masks that are used by professional Noh actors.
生きているような表情と精悍な色気の「喝食」は若い男の役で用いる面。Kasshiki masks, with their lively facial expressions and fearless sexual charm, are worn to portray young male characters.

能面「喝食」Noh mask: “Kasshiki”

檜の角材から面を削り出してゆく。
貝殻から作られた白い顔料を膠で溶いて塗り、
磨くことを繰り返し、なめらかな肌を作ってゆく。
Masks are carved from cypress blocks and are repeatedly painted with a white colorant made from seashells dissolved in glue; they are then polished to create a smooth finish.
