Chubey, a long-established manufacturer of Japanese lanterns that are indispensable for religious sites (temples and shrines) and festivals, maintains techniques that have been passed down since the Edo Period. The frames are made of Kyoto-produced soft bamboo that is looped by bending. Handmade paper from the paper production areas of Japan (Kurodani, Mino, Tosa and Echizen) is used for the lantern covering, on which characters and pictures are rendered in shaved India ink that has been soaked in water and kneaded. The lower part of the lantern is slightly thinned down in consideration of balance when viewed from below.
