蝋燭はイグサの髄の灯芯とハゼの実から絞った蝋、植物由来の成分だけでできている。油煙の少ない和蝋燭は寺社や仏事に欠かせないものとして丹念に手作りされてきた。手描き蝋燭は、供え物の花が乏しい冬に蝋燭に花を描いたことに始まる。現在ではインテリアとして楽しめるよう、専門の絵付師が四季の花や風物を描いている。

Warousoku is a type of candle made using only plant-derived materials – the wick from rush pith and the body from Japanese wax trees. Warousoku candles generate fewer greasy fumes, and have long been carefully handmade as an essential accessory for temples and at Buddhist events. Originally, the use of hand-decorated candles came about when flowers were painted on them in winter because blooms were difficult to obtain. Now, specialist painters draw seasonal flowers and scenery on the candles so that users can enjoy them as interior decoration
