Cypress fans are made of extremely thinly carved strips of Japanese cypress which are bound together at the base, and were in production even before the advent of paper fans. In addition to creating a pleasant breeze for the user, these fans were decorated with crests and pictures, and were enjoyed as refined accessories. The bewitching pictures are applied to the cypress using white chalk and gold paint in a time-honoured fashion. These ornamental fans embellished with cords were used by the ladies of the Heian court; even today they are still indispensable accessories at imperial weddings and other ceremonial events.
