From the Edo period (1603-1867), it has been a custom to pray for the health and longlife of male children by putting small suits of armour on display during the so-called boys’festival, celebrated annually on the 5th of May. Kyoto armour is reminiscent of the aesthetic values of aristocratic society with its characteristic gilt finish. The fine craftsmanship extends from the surface through to the parts of the armour which cannot be seen. A comprehensive range of traditional Japanese crafts (metalwork, woodwork, dyeing, lacquer, Japanese papermaking and so on) have all been employed on a miniature scale in the production of this Samurai armour.

production of genuine samurai armour.
